The NBA schedule continues to roll along as the action on the hardwood continues to heat up. That action will include five games on the NBA schedule for Tuesday January 23rd, 2018 for sports handicappers and fans to take advantage of with their picks. One of those matchups we will have our eyes on will feature the Cleveland Cavaliers heading out to San Antonio to take on the Spurs.
As these two teams get ready to meet on Tuesday Night both enter their showdown on the losing end. For the Cavaliers, they just can’t get things going in the right direction winning just three of their last ten games overall while the Spurs enter this matchup riding back to back losses while dropping six of their last ten overall.
Each of these teams have major concerns heading into the last full week of January. The Cavaliers have struggled on the defensive end of the floor allowing at least 118 points in four of their last six contests with much of the struggles coming against younger and faster teams like the Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors. In each of those losses, the Cavaliers were blown out by at least 10 points and by as many as 34.
The Spurs struggles start with a key injury to Kawhi Leonard who could miss significant time over the next few weeks. Along with the key injury to the teams top star, the team much like the Cavaliers are dealing with a much older squad that includes veterans like Pau Gasol, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.
Here are the keys to the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs matchup on Tuesday January 23rd, 2018.
Cleveland Cavaliers – Find Support for LeBron James
As much as one player can do to win a game, it still takes more than just one player to win a game in the NBA. That has shown up night in and night out around the NBA including in each of the Cavaliers recent losses. James enters Tuesday night’s contest averaging nearly 26.8 points a game to go with 8.7 assists and 7.8 rebounds but in losses he is averaging nearly four points less per contest and nearly two rebounds less. This production has not been picked up by his teammates something that will need to change on Tuesday Night in San Antonio if the team wants to pick up a much needed in.
San Antonio Spurs – Big Time Play from the Point Guard
Yes, the Spurs still have Tony Parker but the problem is his age and injuries are catching up to him. That said if the Spurs want to not only hand the Cavaliers another loss but to find success down the stretch they will need their point guards to step up their play. That includes Parker who is averaging less than nine points in 21 minutes of play to go with just four assists. On Tuesday Night, the Spurs will need both Patty Mills and Tony Parker to put together strong performances while combining for 20-30 points and double digit assists.
