Betting Odds: Eagles (-2) VS Hokies (+2) – O/U 57

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies +2

The 2018 NCAA Football Schedule is heating up as the calendar flips into November as teams continue to fight for a chance to make the playoffs. This week’s schedule is filled with action packed matchups for fans and sports handicappers to be thrilled about including a top 3 matchup between SEC powerhouses Alabama and LSU as well as a top 25 showdown in the Big Ten. With all that said we are turning our attention to a key ACC showdown between the 22 ranked Boston College Eagles and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

As you look around at the matchups this week, it was hard to look past this game as the Hokies sat as underdog despite being home in Blacksburg this weekend. While many will look to the rankings and the fact the Eagles are 6-2 to lean to them this Saturday, it is difficult for us to look past the Hokies. The Hokies have shown up to play against ranked opponents this season posting a 2-1 mark in three contests.

When you look at the numbers behind this matchup, the key to this contest might come down to which team makes the bigger play on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles enter this contest ranked 37th overall in yards per game on the offensive side of the ball while the Hokies are ranked 43rd overall. While both teams have solid offensive attacks, the Eagles have been dominate recording the 3rd most sacks (28) in the country while forcing the 4th most interceptions (13). Meanwhile the Hokies have forced just 18 sacks on the year and five total interceptions.

Here are the keys to the game for both the Boston College Eagles VS Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday November 3rd, 2018 at Lane Stadium.

NCAA Football Keys to the Game

Boston College Eagles – Run the Football

This Eagles team success this season has been on the ground averaging over 220 yards per game on the ground while helping the team average 37 points per contest. Leading that charge is AJ Dillion who has 801 yards on the ground while averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. Along with Dillion, Ben Glines has rushed for 372 yards (5.6 yards per car), David Bailey has rushed for230 (4.7 ypc) and Jeff Smith has rushed for 130 yards (8.1 ypc). In this week’s contest, the Eagles should be able to take advantage of a Hokies defense that has struggled to slow down the running game. On the year the Hokies rank 78th in rushing yards allowed per game (171.9). In the teams three losses, they have been out rushed in two of the three losses.

Virginia Tech Hokies – Play Efficient & Safe

For the Hokies, the 2018 NCAA Football schedule has been much like a roller coaster ride picking up two 25 wins while falling to Old Dominion. That said, the keys to their success against the Eagles on Saturday will come with their ability to play consistent on both sides of the ball while playing safe. In all three of the Hokies losses this season, the team has converted a lower percentage of third down attempt then their opponents on offense and have allowed two of those three teams to pick up the first on more than half of their attempts. Meanwhile the team has struggled to win the turnover over battle turning the ball over more in each of the three contests.

NCAA Football Betting Trends

Boston College Eagles – The Eagles will make the trip down south posting six wins over their first eight contests. Over that stretch the team has covered the spread in six of those contests including going 2-1 against the spread on the road. Along with that success, the Eagles have covered the spread in four straight games against teams with a winning spread as well as in seven of their last eight overall road contests.

Virginia Tech Hokies – As they Hokies get set for their home showdown with the Eagles, the team will look to get past their struggles at home. In three contest this season the Eagles have won just one of those contests. Those same struggles have shown up in their success against the spread covering just one of their first three home contests.  The team has also failed to cover the spread in four of their last five contests following a loss. Despite the struggles the Hokies have covered the spread in six of their last eight home contests against teams with a winning road record.

Head 2 Head – Entering this Saturday’s showdown, the Hokies have won three straight meetings including a blowout 49-0 at home back during the 2016 NCAA Football schedule. Over their past four games in Blacksburg, the Hokies have picked up wins in three of those contests.

What’s next for these two teams?

Virginia Tech Hokies – The Hokies will travel north to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers on Saturday November 10th, 2018.
