If some of the superstars stick around for a while, the rivalry that exists in Tinseltown will be one of the hottest in the history of the National Basketball Association. And when we make our NBA Betting – Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers Spread Pick & Prediction, it’s exciting because it’s the top two teams in the West. This “opening of the re-opening” will take place on Thursday, July 30 at 7:30 PM ET at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
LeBron James‘ first year with the Lakers (49-14 SU, 35-27-1 against the spread) was marred by injury, and he really didn’t have a supporting cast. With the acquisition of Anthony Davis, not only did LeBron find a worthy sidekick, you might even suggest that King James himself is the one who is the complementary piece.
In fact, LeBron leads the NBA in assists with 10.6 per game, while Davis is the Lakers’ leading scorer (26.7 ppg). And of course, what makes A.D. so valuable (and such a cherished commodity if and when he goes on the free agent market) is that he is also a superstar on the defensive end (2.4 blocks per game).
On an individual basis, Davis’ Defensive Rating is third in the league, and that is where the Lakers rank as a team. With most teams who experience a renaissance, as the Milwaukee Bucks have, you’ll find that at the core of all that is a considerable improvement on the defensive end. Their 48.5% shooting accuracy rate is also best in the NBA. And a lot of second shots have come by way of Dwight Howard, who is second in the NBA in offensive rebounding percentage – and who, incidentally, is on hand after some speculation that he would sit out the restart.
In the odds that are available at CentSports, and on which we will make our prediction against the spread, the Clippers are laying a point (-1), after the Lakers had opened up a favorite. The total is 217.5 points.
We’ve talked about how Davis is great at both ends, but the Clippers may have the best 1-2 combination of two-way players in the league, when you consider Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, who obviously hold the key. They average 48 points between them, and now both of them probably catch a break with more rest, with the aftermath of injuries being a concern.
The Clippers, with a 44-20 record (35-29 against the spread) went into the forced break winning seven of their last eight games. And word is that they have been a little more aggressive than most teams when it comes to keeping close contact (not physical, mind you) between players and coaches.
There is a lot of talent on hand – perhaps more than any Clipper team has ever had. In fact, the biggest problem for Rivers may be getting everybody into the act. Marcus Morris and Reggie Jackson were acquired during the season, and they joined with Lou Williams (18.7 ppg) and Montrezl Harrell (18.6) to form the most dangerous bench in the NBA.
Some teams simply happen to know how to defend others. If nothing else, it come down to styles – an important consideration when making a NBA betting. And that appears to be the case with the Clippers, who have not only held the Lakers well below their average shooting percentage in each of the three meetings (of which they’ve won two), but have forced them to take more triples than their season average as well.
In fact, almost seven more per contest. When you can take the opponent out of their game, you can extract an edge. In as much as we feel offense might be a bit choppy, we will look for the Clippers in a small play but also the “under” in the total, as we make our
